St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has gone live with a new integrated patient administration and clinical system from System C. The acute Trust went live simultaneously at Whiston, St Helens and Newton hospitals, with 4,023 Trust staff using the system in the first month.

Enhancing Clinical Care & Efficiency

St Helens and Knowsley is looking to the new patient record system to help its staff continue to provide safe and effective clinical care, as well as to improve working practices, efficiency and operational performance.

Modules deployed include the Medway PAS, A&E, order communications, results reporting and business intelligence software, plus a number of complex integrations into existing Trust systems, including the Trust’s existing Medway maternity module. 

Feedback from Clinical Users

Rowan Pritchard-Jones, consultant plastic surgeon and chief clinical information officer at St Helens and Knowsley, said:

Take up of the system has been very rapid and we have already had lots of positive feedback from our clinical users.

Dr Francis Andrews, assistant medical director/Caldicott Guardian and ED consultant, added;

The software was clear, easy to use and already saving considerable time.

Key features of The Medway System

Medway also includes portal functionality that lets users look at records on third party systems without logging in twice or re-selecting patient records, allowing users to access PACS images and EDMS documents directly from Medway.

In its first month of use since go-live at the beginning of May, Medway has been used to process over 8,000 emergency department patients, and clinicians across the Trust have placed around 137,000 electronic orders.

Collaborative Effort & Staff Engagement 

Christine Walters, director of informatics at St Helens and Knowsley, said:

This was a massive programme of work for us and I have been so lucky to have worked with some exceptional colleagues from across the Trust and System C.

The new system has been very positively received by colleagues from all the different staff groups and we expect it to have a huge impact on helping the hospital to operate much more efficiently and safely for the benefit of our patients.

The whole Trust is excited by the potential that Medway has to offer and I look forward to working further in partnership with System C as we continue our journey.

Proven Deployment Methodology

The project followed System C’s standard 12 month deployment methodology.  This includes customisable template processes and support documentation for interfacing, data migration, testing, training, business change and most other project areas.

Markus Bolton, joint chief executive of System C, added:

This is the 23^rd Trust to go live with Medway over the last five years. Each time we use the same methodology, amended in a process of continuous improvement. St Helens and Knowsley staff have been great to work with and we look to building on this relationship over the coming months and years.
