AI to Improve Efficiency for Health & Social Care Professionals
17th January 2025
Here at System C, we recently announced the development of a new generative artificial intelligence (AI) solution designed to help health and social care professionals save time on administrative tasks. The technology uses secure cloud-hosted large language models (LLMs) to generate draft documentation, referrals and tasks based on audio recordings or notes from clinician-patient or social worker-citizen interactions.
We are integrating several Microsoft services including Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, Azure Cosmos DB and Azure SQL Database to develop and host the AI models in a secure, compliant cloud environment.
AI in Healthcare: Enhancing Efficiency & Accuracy
In healthcare, an AI Assistant interprets clinician notes and records which is then reviewed and approved by the clinician before integration into the CareFlow electronic patient record – critically maintaining the “human in the loop” while reducing administration time and improving accuracy. This results in time savings of over 60% per task, enabling clinicians to spend more time with patients leading to increased patient volume, and generating potential cost savings exceeding £5 million annually per NHS trust.
AI in Social Care: Streamlining Case Management
For social care case management, the technology allows frontline workers to simply record their client meetings via smartphone or laptop. The AI ‘assistant’ then translates the audio into written notes, similarly, improving accuracy while saving time on documentation. This can save up to 45 minutes per full needs assessment, leading to non-cash savings exceeding £1 million per year depending on the authority's size.
Leadership Perspectives
Nick Wilson, CEO of System C said: "AI is an integral part of our vision for improving care delivery. This new offering will allow clinicians and social workers to spend less time on paperwork and more time focusing on providing high-quality care to people. By integrating Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service with CareFlow EPR and Liquidlogic social care case management platforms, we can streamline processes for our customers, reduce administrative burdens and empower health and social care professionals to concentrate on what truly matters."
Jacob West, Managing Director of Healthcare & Life Sciences at Microsoft, commented, "System C’s integration of Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service into their platform represents an advancement in their commitment to empowering health and social care workers to deliver high-quality care and enhance patient and citizen experiences. Their solution focuses on the issue of staff burnout through the responsible application of AI, to reduce the cost of care delivery for all."
Pilot Programmes & Future Plans
We are working with a small number of local authority customers to establish a pilot programme that will demonstrate the proposed benefits before making it more widely available. We are also working closely with an NHS trust to run a pilot programme in the coming weeks, with plans to launch to the broader market early next year.
The AI offering represents the latest innovation in our vision to connect and transform health and care through digital solutions. The company plans to expand the AI assistant's capabilities to support additional clinical and operational use cases by working closely with customers. It will become part of its annual roadmap cycle.
