Software Modelling of Buried Cables

Predicting the thermal stress on high-voltage buried cables is crucial to the running of the national electricity network.

When thermal stress exceeds safe levels, damage to the cable insulation may occur, shortening the life of the cable.

OCC, with its experience and expertise in software development in the engineering sector, was the preferred choice when National Grid Asset Engineering wanted to redevelop its original software for calculating thermal stress on buried high-voltage cables.

Building GLOIN

The new system, known as GLOIN, is a complete redesign of the thermal modelling software. In addition to a new database of engineering data, GLOIN includes use scenarios, clear graphical displays of the thermal effects of heavy loads, and a user-friendly system for modelling cables and estimating margins of safety.

GLOIN enables National Grid to model a cable’s thermal stress and capacity based on the cable-soil conditions and the recent history of load. It can be used to predict when and where a limiting load will be reached under given sets of circumstances, and allows National Grid to manage the electricity network and plan maintenance work.
