BadgerNet Maternity: How the Single Pregnancy Record Supports Clinical Safety
28th August 2024
The SPR is a national-level electronic pregnancy record that allows all BadgerNet organisations providing care to contribute, as long as they are part of the national network. This innovation allows one set of notes for a specific pregnancy to be accessible to every healthcare professional involved, provided their organisation is a BadgerNet Maternity user.
This allows pregnancy (across 60% of UK pregnancies as of 2024), newborn, neonatal, and paediatric information to be shared via the BadgerNet Spine between all those involved, allowing seamless data exchange as well as compliance with national reporting standards. Access to the SPR is part and parcel of the standard benefits of using BadgerNet Maternity and is available at no extra cost.
Key Benefits of the Single Pregnancy Record (SPR):
Continuity of Care
The SPR ensures that all information about a patient’s pregnancy is contained within the same electronic record, whether they are moved or transferred to a different care location. This helps to reduce the clinical risks associated with transferring information between NHS sites and having multiple care records.
Efficiency and Safety
Individuals will no longer need to recount their medical history to a healthcare professional during every visit. Information will be readily available to healthcare professionals, which not only saves time within the appointment, but also minimises the risk of errors in transcribing medical histories and protects the individual from telling a previous trauma, which can be distressing.
Joint Data Responsibility
In cases where care locations belong to different NHS organisations, these sites share joint data controller responsibilities for the SPR, ensuring cohesive and responsible data management.
Security with 'Break Glass' Functionality
Accessing a record within the national Single Pregnancy Record Network requires a national identifier (NHS Number, CHI Number or NHI National Health Index). To view a record, healthcare professionals must 'break glass,' which involves declaring a reason for access, thereby maintaining a fully auditable governance process.
Safeguarding/Social
The SPR also flags to healthcare professionals the potential protection and support which individuals might need during and after pregnancy. This includes support with mental health issues and whether they need support from social services. The SPR can also monitor the patient’s journey during their pregnancy, so clinicians know where they have been and how they have been treated at other care locations.
Complete Views
The SPR also helps to support healthcare professionals by importing any previous BadgerNet pregnancies onto one record, including mental health needs, medical conditions and traumas. This holistic view gives midwives and other healthcare professionals all the information regarding any previous pregnancies that they need to be aware of for the current pregnancy including mental health needs, medical conditions, traumas.
Enhancing Clinical Safety
The integration of the SPR within BadgerNet Maternity significantly enhances clinical safety by providing a centralised, comprehensive view of a pregnancy record.
This unified approach mitigates the risk of missing critical information, improves the accuracy of medical records, and ensures that all healthcare professionals have access to the same data, promoting a seamless care experience. Being able to see all CTGs, USS and lab results from any care setting across Trusts in a real-time contemporaneous record is a huge benefit in providing the safest care.
The SPR is especially useful for those who are travelling whilst going through pregnancy. For example, a woman in Shetland can have her CTG, USS and Blood results seen by a consultant on the mainland and have her midwifery check complete in Shetland without the woman having to leave the island.
By developing advanced technology and fostering a collaborative care environment, BadgerNet Maternity’s Single Pregnancy Record is setting new standards in maternity care, ensuring that both families and neonates receive the safest and highest quality of care.
