North Bristol EPR Decision Delivers Strategic Advantage Across The ICS

9th December 2020

Both acute Trusts across the system to share a single electronic patient record system.

North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) has selected System C as its strategic EPR supplier, in a move designed to support service transformation and the delivery of an integrated care system across the wider Bristol area.

The Deployment of CareFlow Patient Administration System

The Trust, a current Lorenzo user, will be deploying the CareFlow patient administration system in Summer 2022 along with a full range of integrated departmental and clinical functionality, including results, clinical and nursing documentation, care planning, tasks, handover, a clinical portal, patient flow, intelligence and ED. NBT’s EPR programme, as with other digital transformation at the trust, is clinically led and enabled by their IT Directorate. Around 2500 clinical staff at the trust already use CareFlow’s e-observations system, whilst CareFlow Connect has almost 6000 active users.

Partnership with University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust

Neighbouring NHS Trust, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, is already a CareFlow user, working in partnership with System C under NHS England’s Global Digital Exemplar programme. Both acute Trusts in the ICS will therefore now use the same patient record system.

The Strategic Importance Of Our EPR System

Neil Darvill, Director of IT at North Bristol NHS Trust, commented:The choice of the CareFlow patient record system is a cornerstone of the Trust’s long-term digital strategy and will help us improve the efficiency and effectiveness of care to our patients. We are particularly committed now to a wider focus on delivering improved patient pathways and joined up working across the area.”

Standardisation on a single EPR supplier is seen as a key strategic step for the Bristol and North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) ICS, enabling seamless information- sharing across the care community, and helping it design services, plan and measure outcomes across the system, and involving all settings.

Comments from System C

Markus Bolton, joint chief executive of System C, commented: “We very much enjoyed working with North Bristol on the roll-out of their e-observations and care co-coordination systems – both really smooth and successful deployments despite being conducted at the height of the Covid pandemic. We are delighted to be developing the relationship further and helping support the whole system in delivering its vision.”

Future Plans for The ICS

Future plans for the ICS include creating cross-community networks for secure patient-identified referrals between multi-disciplinary care teams, regardless of whether they are working in a hospital, primary care, community or social care.

North Bristol NHS Trust provides hospital and community healthcare to the residents of Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. It is also a regional centre for neurosciences, plastics, burns, orthopaedics and renal.

It employs over 8,000 staff delivering healthcare across Southmead Hospital Bristol, Cossham Hospital, Bristol Centre for Enablement and within the local community of Bristol and South Gloucestershire.
